Texas A&M to honor Clear Channel’s Mays
The man who built Clear Channel Communications Inc. from a lone Texas radio station into a global media giant is getting another honor to add to an already long list.
L. Lowry Mays, who founded the San Antonio-based media conglomerate in 1972 with local auto dealer B.J. “Red” McCombs, is scheduled to receive the McLane Leadership in Business award tonight at a ceremony at Texas A&M University in College Station.
The award from the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation and the Bryan-College Station Chamber of Commerce is meant to recognize outstanding business leaders who also are model corporate citizens.
“The purpose of the award is not only to recognize an individual, but also to use that individual as an example and inspiration to future generations,” said Roman Popadiuk, executive director of the library foundation.
Mays is an Aggie who earned an MBA from Harvard University and has served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. He is a past chairman of the Texas A&M University Board of Regents and a major contributor to the university’s Mays Business School, which bears his name.
He also has made campaign contributions to several Republican candidates, according to data from the Federal Election Commission.
