A Texas teacher has resigned after a 12-year-old student was burned during a science class experiment last week, the Granbury Independent School District said on Tuesday.
The Granbury Police Department responded to an injury report at Granbury Middle School last Friday. The student suffered possible third-degree burns after the 37-year-old female teacher put hand sanitizer in a 12-year-old male student’s hands and lit the flammable solution on fire as part of a class science experiment. Officials are investigating the incident, which will eventually be submitted to the district’s attorney’s office for review.
“A [Granbury Middle School] teacher has resigned and is no longer an employee of the school district. This follows a student injury on Friday during a science experiment,” the school district tweeted. The statement continued to say the case has been turned over to law enforcement for investigation.
Parents said the teacher asked students if they wanted to “see something cool,” according to CBS Dallas / Fort Worth. The teacher had done the experiment “multiple times throughout the day with other students without incident,” Granbury police said. “It looks like every class that day had a group of students volunteer to do it. There was also another classroom that was doing that same thing.”
According to the school district, the injured student was receiving medical care following the incident. Officials did not list the child’s current condition.
The district’s director of communications Jeff Meador told CBS News that the school is unable to provide additional details “given that this is a personnel matter.”
“We must follow federal requirements regarding student confidentiality (sic,)” Meador said in a statement.
