Her speech was one of the standout moments of the evening. Ralph was escorted to the stage by co-star Tyler Jesse Williams.
She wass overcome with emotion as she won best-supporting actress for comedy series. The 65-year-old actress tearfully burst into song and belted out a rendition of Dianne Reeves’s “Endangered Species.” It has been 35 years since a Black woman won in the category.
“I am here to tell you that this is what believing looks like. This is what striving looks like. And don’t you ever, ever give up on you. Thank you, thank you,” said Ralph.
Rickey Smiley said the speech was somewhat disappointing because Ralph did not sing, “I sing because I’m happy,” he said. He wanted her to sing “His Eyes Are on A Sparrow,” which is what Black people should sing when they get an award, Smiley argued. Da Brat said it does not matter what song the talented actress sang; she did an amazing job.
“I felt it on my TV screen, so I know people in the crowd felt it. They gave her a standing ovation. They were clapping,” said Da Brat.
Da Brat said Ralph was only the second woman to win an award in that category. The first was Jackie Harry for her role in the hit comedy series 227.
