A suspected DUI crash on State Route 163 resulted in the deaths of four individuals. The tragic incident occurred early in the morning at the 805 merge, causing the closure of all southbound lanes of SR-163.
Details of the Accident
The crash involved three vehicles: a Toyota Tacoma truck and two Prius cars. California Highway Patrol (CHP) investigators reported that the collision happened around 1:30 AM when one of the Priuses was rear-ended, leading to a violent crash that left the vehicles mangled.
Victims and Arrests
The victims included a 25-year-old, a 26-year-old, and a 27-year-old. The fourth victim’s identity is still being determined. The drivers of the other Prius and the Toyota Tacoma truck, aged 25 and 32 respectively, were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Toxicology reports are pending to determine if they were under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or both.
Road Closure and Investigation
The crash caused significant traffic disruption, closing the southbound lanes of SR-163 for several hours. Caltrans officials, CHP, and investigators worked at the scene to collect evidence and manage the traffic backup in Kearny Mesa. The lanes have since been reopened.
