Don't know how he found us but New York City Council Member John Liu and his supporters contacted Radio Facts to let us know that they are watching Troi Torain (aka "DJ Star") as he will begin a new job on January 15th (or as you read this) on WNYZ (FM 87.7). Liu and his supporters state "We expect him to have been rehabilitated and live up to his new promise of offering responsible social commentary." See below some news reports of interest.

EXCERPT - Controversial DJ Star moved to tuck his past behind him Wednesday as he announced his return to New York radio.

The Star and Buc Wild show, featuring White Trash Helene, Chris the Queer
(Chris the Queen has a better ring to it) and Miguel Candelaria, is scheduled to launch Jan. 15 on WNYZ (87.7 FM), which will be switching from Russian music to a top-40 format tagged "Pulse 87." Chicken and Chittlins', how do you go from Russian to top 40?

It will be simulcast on lowpower TV station WNYZ-LP (Ch. 6) and streamed on the Internet.
Why do they have to let us know it's 'LOWpower'?

At a press conference Wednesday, Star said he will offer "great entertainment" and "responsible social commentary."...
um hmm, for NOW

That was a problem at his last job, with WWPR (105.1 FM), which fired him in July 2006 after he made what were widely considered threatening remarks about the child of a competitor, DJ Envy on WQHT (97.1 FM).
I'm opting out of this one

Star (birth name: Troi Torain) was arrested and eventually did three days of community service.
Damn, he must be EXAUSTED

City Councilman John Liu (D-Queens), a harsh critic of Star, said yesterday, "I wish him well. He was out of work 18 months, and I hope he's learned his lesson."
WHAT? Should he go and stand in the corner next? No milk and cookies before bedtime?

Liu said the larger question of corporate responsibility for radio conduct remains unresolved and added, "I hope this new company isn't looking to make a name for itself with outrageous content."
Um, someone must have forgot to tell him this is an URBAN radio show, we only talk about nightclubs, church and food.

Do your thing Troi, there are not enough of us creative revolutionaries in urban radio. If you want to keep your job for many years to come, shit, talk about black people (laugh).

  1. Troi Torain is having liver problems from all his drinking and drugs. He may not even get a chance to get back on the air. Poetic justice.
