Twin Cities-based music service wins national award

Julian Green accepted an Anthem Award Monday in New York for Carbon Sound, the new music stream, website and app dedicated to celebrating the depth, breadth and influence of Black musical expression for which Green serves as content director.

The Anthem Awards celebrate purpose and mission-driven work, and this year honored Carbon Sound with a bronze award in the category of diversity, equity, and inclusion; podcast and audio.

“Music is a universal language,” said Green in his acceptance speech. “A shared heartbeat that connects us all. Build Community Through Music.”

“It’s been a privilege to get to work with this amazing team pushing the boundaries of public media,” said The Current’s managing director David Safar. Carbon Sound is a project of The Current and Minnesota Public Radio, funded in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).

“Our congratulations to Carbon Sound for winning an Anthem Award,” said Jacquie Gales Webb, vice president, radio, for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. “Launched less than a year ago, Carbon Sound is one of the newest Urban Alternative format stations that are drawing younger and more diverse audiences to public radio. And it’s already among several public media winners of the Anthem Award, affirming the value and importance of public media’s mission-driven work.”

Carbon Sound is a collaboration with KMOJ with support provided by staff and leadership of The Current and Minnesota Public Radio. The team also includes the host of Carbon Sound, Sanni Brown, and community engagement specialist Andre Griffin.
