HT students’ national council appointments

ATLANTA, GA — Because of students Antanese Kinard and Christopher Ky Nguyen, Huston-Tillotson University is further widening its national footprint.  This fall, Kinard and Nguyen will begin their terms as National PAC Southwestern Regional Director and Parliamentarian, respectively.

“I hope this will show that our university sets a standard for its students in how we present ourselves, how we conduct business, and who we are as a university,” Kinard said of her appointment.  Nguyen added, “I aim to be the best to perform ever in this role and get work done.  I’m going to take care of business and serve as an effective team member.”

The tones that Kinard and Nguyen set for their positions mirror Huston-Tillotson’s tone and expectations for its students.

Huston-Tillotson’s core values are Integrity, Diversity, Excellence, Accountability, and Leadership (IDEAL).  Some of the IDEAL things that Kinard wants to accomplish include setting a standard for each regional school.  She wants each school’s president to submit a monthly report on his or her PAC’s activities and finances and whether they are enacting the United Negro College Fund’s (UNCF) initiatives.

In his new role, Nguyen wants to continue his leadership experience.

“I’m objective driven and like to get stuff done,” Nguyen emphasized.

Previously, Nguyen, a rising junior, was voted Huston-Tillotson’s freshman class vice president.  This role included Nguyen planning and managing events and much more.  As a member of the national PAC board, he wants to plan a successful 2019 national PAC convention.

Both Nguyen and Kinard are W.E.B. Du Bois Scholars.  Kinard is a rising sophomore and on a pre-law track. Nguyen is a rising junior and on a computer science track.

National Award

At the same national convention in February 2018 where Kinard and Nguyen put their names and qualifications in the running for the national board positions, Huston-Tillotson’s PAC earned national distinction as the “Most Unified” PAC.

Huston-Tillotson’s Alumni Relations Director La Juana Sanford serves as the advisor to the campus’ PAC.  She shared her excitement about Kinard, Nguyen, and the overall PAC’s accomplishments.

“In my role as the advisor to the HT Pre-Alumni Council (PAC), I have a front row seat in watching the abundance of dedication and heart that these campus leaders pour into building their organization.  They have an I.D.E.A.L. vision for the future that encompasses the diversity of the campus.  Being named the ‘Most Unified PAC’ at the UNCF National Leadership Conference in 2018 and securing two seats on the National PAC Board (NPAC) is proof of the synergy that is developing within their group.  As Director of Alumni Relations, it has been my experience that student leaders who have been actively engaged in PAC tend to be the alumni leaders of the future. Strong student leaders make strong alumni leaders!”
