Things We Dare Not Do (Cosas que no hacemos), the second feature film by Mexican director and cinematographer Bruno Santamaría will have its U.S. premiere in the Documentary and Out-look competitions at the 56th annual edition of the Chicago International Film Festival, followed by its participation at the 11th edition of DOC NYC.
Acclaimed at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival Film Festival where it had its world premiere, Things We Dare Not Do offers a choral portrait of a small coast village on Mexico’s Pacific coast, featuring sixteen-year-old Ñoño, a teenager who dances, runs, and plays with the free spirit of the younger kids he hangs around. But when an incident disrupts the seemingly idyllic atmosphere, Ñoño bravely takes the bold step of coming out to his parents, telling them he wants to dress as a woman.
Executive produced by Film of Vision and winner of the Best Film New Directors Award at the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival and the Best Documentary Award at the Lima Film Festival, the film will be available to stream for Midwestern audiences (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri) during the Chicago Film Festival taking place October 14-25, and to audiences nationwide during DOC NYC between November 11-19.
With an exquisite cinematography by the director himself, Things We Dare Not Do takes the contemporary struggle for queer identity out of the usual urban setting, providing a fresh perspective on the issue and and a moving tale of emancipation.
