Universal Music Group Welcomes James Steven as New Communications Head

Universal just lured Warner’s communications heavyweight, James Steven, to spearhead its messaging strategy. This move signals a major shift in UMG’s approach to communications.

Universal Music Group (UMG) has officially announced the appointment of James Steven as its new Executive Vice President and Chief Communications Officer. Steven transitions from Warner Music Group, where he held the role of Chief Communications Officer for a decade, showcasing a proven track record in the industry.

Effective January 26, 2024, Steven will operate from UMG’s New York office and will report directly to Will Tanous, UMG’s Chief Administrative Officer. Tanous expressed confidence in Steven’s abilities, noting, “I know first-hand the extraordinary skill and dedication James brings to strategic communications and storytelling.”

Tanous further emphasized the significance of Steven’s appointment, stating, “His love of music and his broad experience across media and technology makes him an ideal fit for UMG as we enter the next phase of growth, driven by strategic initiatives that will unlock new opportunities for artists, songwriters, and fans alike.”

UMG Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge echoed these sentiments, welcoming Steven to the team. He pointed out the necessity of bringing in a communications executive with a strong background, particularly as Tanous expands his responsibilities within the company. Grainge remarked, “Given Will’s broadened role, it was important that we brought in a communications executive with experience and perspective – one who was able to step right in to help us continue to shape the future of music.”

Steven’s time at Warner Music Group was marked by significant milestones. He played a vital role in the company’s IPO in 2020, which was a pivotal moment for Warner, and he also led communications during the CEO transition in 2022. His extensive experience includes a variety of roles at Warner, starting as part of the international communications team in London in 2007, before relocating to New York in 2012 and gradually climbing the ranks to his current position.

Before joining Warner, Steven worked at several public relations firms, collaborating with clients across diverse sectors such as technology, entertainment, automotive, and food. In addition to his work at UMG, he serves as a board member of the Recording Industry Association of America, further solidifying his influence in the music industry.
