WHAT? Baltimore Musicians Take Over New Radio Station!

WTMD Launches The Baltimore Channel on WTMD HD-2 and on wtmd.org
In the ultimate act of local programming, WTMD 89.7 FM/HD has launched The Baltimore
Channel on WTMD HD-2 and on line at wtmd.org. The Baltimore Channel airs music from
Baltimore-based musicians 24 hours a day, seven days a week — the only public radio station
in the country to give local band s, singers and artists their own full time radio station.
“Baltimore is one of the most important music scenes in America today and it only seemed
natural to make sure that the musicians who play their hearts out here also have a radio station
where they can be heard at any time. “said WTMD general manager Stephen Yasko.
“We congratulate WTMD on the launch of its all-local digital HD Radio channel right here in our
own backyard, “said Bob Struble, President and CEO of Columbia, Maryland -based iBiquity
Digital Corporation, the developer of HD Radio technology. “Providing the community with
sounds of local artists is an excellent use of HD Radio technology. I look forward to listening to
The Baltimore Channel FM/HD2 on the way to work.”
Listeners can tune in The Baltimore Channel on WTMD 89.7-2 or stream the station live in a
variety of audio formats at WTMD’s website, wtmd.org. In addition to the stream, WTMD hosts
the largest video archive of Baltimore-based band performances and other news about the region’s
music scene. Free music downloads are also available from the Baltimore Channel’s
featured artist of the month.
Several Baltimore band s will be on hand to celebrate the launch of The Baltimore Channel on
Wednesday, February 25, 2009 during WTMD’s Winter Fund Drive. Baltimore musicians will
answer phones and solicit station memberships on air with WTMD disc Radio DJeys. Band s scheduled
to participate include: E. Joseph, 3 Fifths, The Eureka Birds, David Andrew Smith, The
Turn and more.
The Baltimore Channel currently airs new and archive editions of Baltimore Unsigned,
WTMD’s weekly performance and interview program devoted entirely to local music. Host
Sam Sessa’s weekly interviews bring out the compelling stories behind the musicians who “live
next door. “Original episodes of Baltimore Unsigned air Tuesdays at 8 p.m. and Saturdays at
9 a.m. on WTMD 89.7 FM/HD1.
