An update in the investigation of Tyre Nichols’ death in Memphis, Tennessee reveals that Officer Preston Hemphill, who was involved in the arrest, has been relieved of duty while the investigation is ongoing.
However, Hemphill, who is white, has not been charged or fired, while five other officers involved, who are all Black, have been fired and charged with second-degree murder.
Officer Hemphill was the third officer present at the initial traffic stop, and his body camera footage was the first to be released. Hemphill’s lawyer states that he was never present at the second scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
