The surge in car break-ins is not limited to isolated incidents. Surveillance footage from early Friday morning in Fairmount captured three individuals fleeing from a car they had stolen.
The suspects had broken into the vehicle through its sunroof, highlighting the brazen nature of these crimes. In addition to stealing vehicles, there has been a worrying trend of thieves targeting valuables and even vehicle registrations. This trend has only added to the unease felt by residents across Philadelphia and its suburbs.
According to data collected by the 6 ABC Data Journalism Team, there have been 6,852 thefts from vehicles in Philadelphia so far this year. The data indicates that the majority of these thefts have occurred in the city’s 22nd, 9th, and 26th police districts.
