Cinema Tropical, the leading presenter of Latin American cinema in the United States, is proud to unveil its annual list of the Best Latin American and U.S. Latinx Films of the Year. The selection includes 26 Latin American productions from ten countries and six U.S. Latinx films, representing the best in contemporary filmmaking as chosen by the New York-based organization.
This year’s selection features acclaimed films from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and the United States. All selected titles will compete for the 15th Annual Cinema Tropical Awards.
Winners in categories including Best Film, Best Non-Fiction Film, Best Director, Best First Film, and Best U.S. Latinx Film will be announced at an in-person ceremony on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at Film at Lincoln Center in New York City.
The winners in the Latin American cinema category will be determined by a jury composed of Josh Gardner, Associate Programmer at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center; Milton Guillén, Senior Programmer for the Camden International Film Festival and the Points North Institute; and Isabel Rojas, Director of OaxacaCine.
The U.S. Latinx Film category winner will be selected by Sabrina Avilés, Founder and Executive Director of CineFest Latino Boston; Eugenio del Bosque, Director of CineFestival San Antonio; and Gabriel Magraner, Associate Director of The Latinx Project at New York University.
Eligible films are a minimum of 60 minutes in length and premiered between May 1, 2023, and April 30, 2024.
