Discovery of the Deceased Child
On a Sunday night, Pima County Sheriff’s Department deputies discovered the body of a 9-year-old boy on a couch inside a home in Picture Rocks. The boy’s body was found decomposing, surrounded by unsanitary conditions and venomous spiders, such as black widows.
Father’s Statement and Initial Observations
The father, identified as 38-year-old Joseph Antonson, told deputies that his son had fallen ill on July 12th. Antonson claimed he intended to seek medical help for his son but found him unresponsive and without a pulse upon returning from starting his car. He did not contact emergency services immediately.
Living Conditions and Immediate Actions
Deputies noted the house lacked running water and functional toilets. The residence was filled with empty beer cans, water jugs containing urine, soiled diapers, rotten food, and piles of trash. Neighbors reported seeing the boy outside at night with a flashlight and noted the family’s reclusive nature.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Due to the conditions of the home and Antonson’s failure to call 911, he faces felony charges for negligent homicide and child abuse. He is currently in custody, awaiting further legal action.
