Migrant Caravan Departs
A new migrant caravan has departed from a city near Mexico’s border with Guatemala. The group, consisting of hundreds of individuals, began their journey on Sunday and is traveling on foot. It will take several months for them to reach the U.S. border.
Current Location and Composition
The caravan has recently arrived in Tapachula, Mexico, after traveling from Hidalgo. The group includes migrants from at least 12 different countries, totaling around 1,000 individuals. This group consists of both single adults and families.
Mexican Authorities’ Response
So far, Mexican authorities have not stopped the caravan, despite increased immigration enforcement in the country. Authorities have been sending many migrants back to southern Mexico and conducting immigration checkpoints and sweeps.
Expected Route and Challenges
The caravan is expected to travel towards Mexico City next. Many migrants aim to enter the U.S. through the Tijuana border into San Diego, although it will take them several months to reach this point.
Motivations for Migration
Migrants are reportedly concerned about the possibility of a Trump administration victory in the upcoming November election. They fear the potential end of the CBP One application, which allows legal entry into the U.S. by scheduling asylum appointments, and the reintroduction of the “Remain in Mexico” policy.
Future Developments
The caravan’s immediate goal is to reach Mexico City, where migrants hope to apply for asylum. However, it remains uncertain whether Mexican authorities will intercept the caravan as they progress through various states.
