A shooting in a drug trafficking area in Washington D.C. has left two dead and three injured, said police. On Wednesday afternoon, the shooting took place in northwest Washington D.C.

Around 12:50 PM, police responded to reports of shots fired at North Capitol and O street, Northwest.

Once they arrived, two people with gunshot wounds were discovered by officers. They were pronounced dead at the scene. The three other victims managed to make it to nearby hospitals on foot. Their conditions remain unknown.

None of the victims appear to be minors.

During an initial investigation, it was determined that at least two suspects got out of a “small, black SUV” in front of a building and opened fire on a crowd of people with semi-automatic weapons before exiting the scene.

“This appears to be an open-air drug market,” said the Executive Assistant Chief of Police Ashan Benedict. He told reporters that officers routinely police the area and make narcotic possession arrests.
