Historic Fire Devastates Miami Apartment Building
A significant fire broke out in a four-story apartment building in Miami, marking the most severe blaze the city has seen in 25 years. The intense inferno resulted in over 40 residents being displaced, many of whom are elderly. The American Red Cross is assisting these residents, who are expected to stay in hotels for the next two weeks.
Arson and Attempted Murder Charges
Miami police confirmed the arrest of 73-year-old Juan Francisco Figueroa Figueroa. He has been charged with arson and attempted felony murder after a shooting victim was found at the scene of the fire. Figueroa, who lives on the same floor where the fire and shooting began, was booked into jail overnight.
Victim Identified and in Critical Condition
The shooting victim, identified as 30-year-old Fidel Pyote, a maintenance man at the Temple Court Apartments, was critically injured. Pyote was found with a bullet wound to his torso and is currently in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital. His family remains hopeful for his recovery following surgery to remove the bullet.
Investigation and Aftermath
The fire forced firefighters to retreat at one point due to its intensity, with heavy smoke sending three firefighters and one resident to the hospital. The firefighters have since been released. Figueroa remains in jail and is expected to appear before a bond court judge. The motive for his actions is still unknown.
