In the late 80s and 90s, the rap music industry was marred by violence, with some artists falling victim to it while others became perpetrators. To address this issue, the Rap Intelligence Unit was formed within the police department. Derrick Parker, a former cop, played a pivotal role in this unit, utilizing his extensive knowledge of the industry to provide intelligence and reduce violence.

During his tenure, Parker worked tirelessly to understand the dynamics of the rap community and its associated crime. His objective was not merely to make arrests but to gather information, reduce violence, and maintain fairness in his dealings with everyone involved.

One of the most high-profile cases he was involved in was the shooting incident involving Sean “Puffy” Combs, Jamal “Shyne” Barrow, and Jennifer Lopez at Club New York. Parker was called to the scene that night and later assisted in the investigation that ensued.

According to Parker, the altercation stemmed from a dispute between Puffy, Shyne, and other individuals, including Scar, a deceased figure from Brooklyn. Allegedly, Puffy accidentally bumped into Scar, leading to a confrontation that escalated when one of Scar’s friends threw money at Puffy. This prompted Shyne to draw his weapon and fire shots, resulting in chaos inside the club.

Police arrived swiftly, and Shyne was apprehended outside the club with a gun in his possession. Puffy and JLo attempted to flee but were blocked by law enforcement. While there were allegations of Puffy trying to bribe the driver, he was eventually acquitted of any wrongdoing. Shyne, on the other hand, served a lengthy prison sentence and was subsequently deported.

Despite tensions between Puffy and Shyne, Parker asserts that Puffy should not have been convicted for the shooting incident. He maintains that there was no evidence implicating Puffy in the altercation, aside from rumors.

The Club New York shooting incident remains a significant moment in the history of hip-hop, highlighting the complexities and challenges within the industry.
