A tragic car accident on DuSable Lake Shore Drive has left a man dead and an 11-year-old boy critically injured. The incident occurred early this morning, around 3:30 AM, when a vehicle traveling southbound experienced a tire blowout near 47th Street.
Details of the Crash
The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Unit is currently investigating the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports indicate that the tire blowout caused the driver to lose control of the car, which veered off the road, crossed a grassy area, and collided with a tree. The impact left the car severely damaged, wrapped around the tree upon the arrival of responding officers.
Victims and Their Conditions
The man driving the car was immediately transported to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The 11-year-old boy, who suffered injuries to his head and body described as blunt force trauma, is also receiving treatment at the same hospital and remains in critical condition. The relationship between the man and the boy has not been disclosed by the police.
Current Status
Following the accident, southbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive were temporarily closed but have since been reopened, allowing traffic to flow normally. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the identity of the deceased man.
