Victorian Government Staff Criticize Police Presentation as Racist (Video)

Presentation Controversy

Victoria’s Department of Justice staff members criticized a police presentation they attended, labeling it as racist, inappropriate, and overly graphic. The presentation, aimed at providing an impactful look at the youth gang landscape in Victoria, included graphic vision of serious assaults and murders, which primarily depicted the South Sudanese community.

Immediate Complaints

Complaints began pouring in shortly after the presentation ended. Staff members described the presentation as gratuitously shocking and focused solely on African gangs. The commentary by the presenter was also described as flippant and racist. Attendees were extremely affected and disturbed, with one stating that the warnings about violent content were insufficient.

Department’s Response

The Department of Justice quickly responded to the complaints. The secretary of the department contacted the then acting chief of police and sent a formal letter raising concerns. The letter included claims that the presenter used the n-word, referred to a child as an “offender for life,” and made comments about sending people home in relation to visa cancellations.

Community Reaction

The head of Victoria’s South Sudanese Community Association did not comment directly on the presentation but highlighted the challenges faced by young people who are unfairly profiled. He emphasized the diversity within the South Sudanese community and expressed frustration over the community being singled out negatively while positive contributions, such as serving in the army or police, are often overlooked.

Police Response

Victoria Police declined to be interviewed by the ABC but provided a written statement. The statement asserted that the presentation aimed to offer insight into the youth gang environment and the challenges faced by police. It denied any racism, stating that the focus was on criminal offending examples rather than any specific ethnicity or group.
